July 17 until August 30,2008 Opening Reception:Thursday, July 17 th , 2008, 7-11 pm www.thesonicself.org CAM - 556 West 22nd Street , New York, NY 10011,212.255.0719 www.chelseaartmuseum.org From July 17th untilAugust 30th, 2008, the Sonic Self isbringing together local and international sound artists, musicians, video/multimedia and performanceartists to facilitate the exchange and development of pioneering ideas, innovative skills andpractices in contemporary Sound Art discipline. The Sonic Self - a sound-art relatedexhibition aims at developing an open and direct audio-visual dialog betweenvideo and sound artists in order to expose significant similarities anddifferences in the growing confluence ofaudio and visual experiences in the emerging Sonic Culture, where;communication, sound and visual experience merge as significant pattern in thecultural sensibility towards sound and the surroundingpersistent, random audio architecture a kind of sonic explosion that can beseen as a breakthrough of the Sonic Itself. The Sonic world (an audible space) - is an emerging intersection between the audio and visual experiences, based onincreasing internet and digital technology inventions - gave the sound a most significant stage in the surrounding environment in themultimedia environment ofcontemporary culture than ever before. The exploration of the sound emergent spaces, time ofaudio resonance, sound design, audio-visual simulation, virtual dimension, linguistic utterances, musicalperformance or random noise, becomes an individual expression which could exceed itsform in relation to our internal self and sonic influences.
As Damian Catera says:Sound is no longer trapped within the mechanism of the ear; its multidisciplinary aspects are reflected in a blurringof sensory experiences. Sound is tactile, visual, spatial and spiritual. Theseelements have long been ingrainedin the experience of sound since the dawn of humanity. Jimmy Hendrix's famous quotationWhen the power of love overcomes the love of power, theworld will know peace can certainly also be applied to the SonicSelfas an underlying and unifying inspirationwhich brought together many of the participating sound artists from around the worldwith the main goal that their collaborative projects bridge disparate audio-visualpractices and expose their sharedlanguages -- human sonic resonance. The Sonic Self - An exhibitionexploring sound related art, curated by Jolanta Gora-Wita,Koshek Swaminathan, Anna Frants, Koan Jeff Baysa, Yaro, with guestcurator Maciej Zygmunt Czarkowski, will presentworks by selected pioneering artists, who use sound as their medium, encompassinga spoken word, field recordings, computer generated sound, video projection, interactive art, sound performance,avant-garde theater, live music and DJ sampling. The Sonic Self artists will collectivelyexamine forms in which we communicate with each other and with the world around usby way of articulate sounds, music, dialog, visuals and motion - transforming the perception andtransporting the mind through an internal sound experience. The curators of the Sonic Selfwill next bring this unique international soundproject to Chennai, India, in winter of 2009, and to St. Petersburg,Russia in spring of 2009.
